HONOLULU - The University of Hawai'i dropped a 4-1 decision tonight to Long Beach State splitting its two games in the 4th Kipa Aloha Malihini Tournament at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Long Beach State (14-4) took an early lead in the second inning when Jamie Farnworth led off with a single to left. Marcel Torres then bunted and April Crowell's throw to second was wide allowing both runners to be safe. Roxanne Staniorski then sacrificed both runners up a base. With one out, UH starter Melissa Coogan (4-7) struckout Melanie McCauley looking, but catcher Denise Dahlberg came up throwing to third to try and double off Farnworth and ended up throwing the pick-off throw into left field.

That would be all the scoring LBSU starter Meredith Cervenka (7-1) would need as she spaced five hits over seven innings striking out two and walking one.

The 49ers added two more insurance runs in the fifth inning on RBI singles by Arleigh Thorp and Farnworth.

UH tried to rally in the seventh tacking on one run on a wild pitch, but left runners on second and third when the final out was recorded.

Hawai'i falls to 12-11 on the season and the 3-1 in the tournament. Long Beach State improves to 14-4 overall and 4-0 in the tourney.
