Hawai'i Sends Out Seniors with 6-5 Win Over San Jose State

HONOLULU - A three-goal performance by Shannon Carroll, including the game-winner in sudden-death overtime, led the No. 6 University of Hawai'i water polo team to a 6-5 victory over No. 12 San Jose State, Wednesday afternoon, at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex. By giving Rainbow Wahine seniors Leanna Hahn, Amber Lumb, and Rilea Stober a win in their final home match of the season, UH improved to 10-9 overall and 4-5 in the MPSF.

Hawai`i struck first as Carroll forced a shot past San Jose State goalie Michelle Rozzen for the 1-0 lead. The Spartans responded in the second, taking advantage of a UH offensive foul to net a quick counterattack goal and knot the match at 1-1 at halftime.

SJSU's Angela Riddle scored from outside at 4:40 in the third to give the Spartans a 2-1 lead but the Rainbow Wahine quickly answered 43 seconds later with goals from Audrey Harrer and Makana Whitford to take a 3-2 lead into the fourth. Riddle's goal to open the period knotted the teams at 3-3, but again UH came back behind Carroll's put-back goal with 21 seconds remaining to regain the lead, 4-3. However, SJSU managed to draw and convert a four-meter penalty shot with 10 seconds left to send the match into overtime.

In the first extra period, a game-ejection on SJSU's Katie Morgan, led to a UH penalty goal and a 5-4 lead. Once again, the Spartans used last minute heroics to pull even, as Scott tied the match 5-5 with 36 seconds to play, resulting in sudden-death overtime. UH's defense stepped up their effort, as goalie Lumb turned back several SJSU scoring chances before Carroll hit the game-winner, giving Hawai`i its first MPSF overtime victory in three tries this season.

Carroll added two steals and an assist to her three goals, while Lumb notched her second straight double-digit save match with 11 blocks and a steal.

Hawai`i will enjoy a two-week layoff before leaving for the road, starting with a match against No. 1 USC. Looking for their first win over the Women of Troy since 1998, the match is slated for April 16 at the McDonald's Swim Stadium at 5 p.m. PST.
