PALO ALTO, Calif. - Hawai`i split its two games today at the Stanford Classic at the Smith Family Stadium. UH lost the first game of the day to Brigham Young, 5-2, in a game moved to today because of rain on Thursday, and Hawai`i shutout UC Riverside in the second game, 5-0.
In the first game, UH's Shannon Tabion (12-6) took the loss allowing 10 hits and five earned runs, while striking out eight and walking two.
BYU's Niki Andersen picked up the win limiting the UH hitting attack to four hits -- all singles.
BYU (16-8) put a three spot on the board in the second on a sacrifice fly by Debbie Dodds and RBI singles by Krystle Chamberlain and Jennifer Whiteley.
BYU added another stick in the third as Ianeta Lei doubled, was sacrificed to third, and scored on Ashleyn Russell's single.
UH pulled to within two in third as Tracie Uchima single, moved to second when BYU shortstop mishandled Noelle Izumi's grounder. After Denise Dahlberg struckout, Tyleen Tausaga singled through the right side to knock in Uchima. Jennifer Hackett came on as a pinch-runner for Tausaga and she and Izumi pulled the double steal.
BYU cappped the scoring in the fifth as three-straight singles by Lei, Paige Paramore, and Russell added the final tally.
In the second game, UH's Melissa Coogan (6-9) went the distance striking out six Highlanders and walking two. She scattered three hits as the offense game her late run support.
The game was tied heading into the fourth when UH broke the ice as April Crowell hit a one-out single to left and scored on Ashley Ruff's triple to right. Amanda Garza drew a two-out walk and UH pulled the double steal again but this time UCR shortstop was credited with a throwing error allowing Ruff to score.
Hawai`i added another run in the fifth on Dahlberg's solo homer to left on UCR losing pitcher Kimberly Dillon, who lasted only 4.2 innings before reliever Sara Radabaugh went the final 2.1 frames.
UH tacked on some insurance runs in the seventh as Justina Kahaku led off with a triple and scored on when Uchima's grounder to second was misplayed. Izumi then tried an unsuccessful sacrifice bunt forcing Uchima at second. Izumi then stole second, advanced to third on Dahlberg's fly out to center, and scored on Tausaga's single up the middle. UC Riverside falls to 8-26 on the year.
Hawai`i (18-18) concludes play in the Stanford Classic Sunday.
