WAIPAHU -The University of Hawai`i women's tennis team fell, 5-2, to the University of Kansas Jayhawks Wednesday afternoon, marking the squad's sixth consecutive loss. The Rainbow Wahine dropped to 7-11 on the season, while the Jayhawks rise to 4-10.
Kansas took the early lead with wins at all three doubles positions. On the No. 2 court Hawai`i's Sylvia Jaros and Kimberly Curtis closed in to within one game before Kansas' Emily Haylock and Ashley Filberth came away with an 8-6 win. Likewise at the No. 3 position the Rainbow Wahine duo of Justine Boutet and Renata Camargo fell, 8-6, to Christine Skoda and Brittany Brown.
In singles action the Rainbow Wahine fought hard, but could not muster the wins they needed to come away with the victory. On the No. 1 court Lauren Fitzgerald lost her first set to Jayhawk Courtney Steinbock, 6-4, and pushed the second set to 6-all but failed to force a third set after dropping the tiebreaker 10-5. But the Rainbow Wahine did find victory in the No. 5 and 6 positions. On the No. 5 court senior Camargo narrowly won her first set, 7-6 (4) against Kansas' Brittany Brown and decisively sealed the victory in the second set with a 6-3 win. In the No. 6 position Hawai`i's Curtis dropped the first set, 3-6 against Luiza Loureiro but forced a third set with a 6-4 victory in the second set. Curtis then blanked Loureiro, 6-0, to give the Rainbow Wahine their second victory of the day.
The Rainbow Wahine will have a week to prepare for their upcoming match versus Azusa Pacific on April 12 at the Central Oahu Tennis Complex.
