WAIPAHU - The Hawai'i women's tennis team dropped its first Western Athletic Conference match of the season to No. 64 Boise State, 5-2, Monday afternoon, at the Central Oahu Tennis Complex. The Rainbow Wahine fell to 7-10 and 3-1 in the WAC, while suffering its fifth consecutive loss.
Boise State took the early 1-0 lead after winning all three doubles matches. But the Rainbow Wahine fought back in singles competition. UH won the Nos. 2 and 5 positions as Sylvia Jaros swept Alissa Ayling, 6-2, 6-2, and Renata Camargo defeated Tiffany Coll, 6-1, 6-1. The victory for Camargo was her 12th of the season and improved her two-year singles record to 24-5 in dual matches.
Junior Lauren Fitzgerald nearly pulled off the upset of previously ranked Jemima Hayward at the No. 1 court. Fitzgerald had match-point in the third set, with a 6-5 lead, but could not put away her opponent in falling 7-6 (3) in the tie-breaker. Junior Paige Mainor let a 1-0 set lead slip away in her match to Megan Bjorkman at the No. 4 court, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.
"We played even with them and all of the matches were tight," head coach Carolyn Katayama said. " It came down to a few matches that could've gone either way. Our performance just tells us that we're improving as a team and getting better as the season progresses."
The Rainbow Wahine hit the court against Kansas, Wednesday, March 24. Doubles action begins at 10:00 a.m. at the Central Oahu Tennis Complex.
