Gammie Finishes Runner-Up at Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational

KANEOHE—The University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine golf team wrapped up the 2004 Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational by finishing in a tie for fourth place, powered by the performance of freshman Dale Gammie. UH, the host team, posted a final round score of 311 to end with a three-round total of 929 on the 5,574 yard Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course.

Gammie, a native of Pukalani, Maui, played her best golf of the season as she finished in a four-way tie for second place. Gammie shot a two-over-par 74 and finished with a three-round total of 221. Freshman Sara Odelius climbed to ninth place after shooting a two-over-par 74 in the final round. Odelius posted a three-round total of 225. Also competing for the Rainbow Wahine were sophomore Tara Chappell (244, T36th) and seniors Rene Krause (245, T38th) and Megan McGuinness (251, T43rd).

New Mexico dominated the nine-team field by finishing 29 strokes ahead of second place San Diego State. Ranked third in the country by Golf Week/Sagarin, New Mexico shot a final round 295 to claim the team championship with a total of 889. Washington State's Kim Welch notched a one-under-par 71 in the final round to jump from sixth place after the first day to the individual title. Welch's three-day total of 219 was two strokes better than Gammie and three other competitors, including two Lobos.

The Rainbow Wahine will next travel to Colorado to compete in the Mountain View Collegiate, hosted by Colorado and Colorado State, March 27-28.
