Rainbow Wahine 1-1 After First Day of Stanford Invite

STANFORD, Calif. - The University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine Water Polo team split its two matches on the first day of the Stanford Invitational, Saturday, at the Avery Aquatic Center. The Rainbow Wahine dropped its opening match to top-ranked UCLA, 6-2, but later defeated Santa Clara, 13-5, in the nightcap.

UH held the Bruins scoreless after the first period, while taking a 1-0 lead. The Rainbow Wahine continued its strong play and found themselves in a 2-2 deadlock with the top team in the country at the half. Junior Shannon Carroll knotted the game at two going into the half.

UCLA dominated the second half, shutting down the Hawai‘i offense. The Bruins took the lead for good with a goal in the third period. In the fourth quarter, UCLA closed out the match by scoring three goals for a 6-2 victory.

In its second match, the Rainbow Wahine routed Santa Clara, 13-5. With UH holding a 6-4 halftime advantage, the Rainbow Wahine took a commanding lead by scoring four goals in the third quarter.

Sophomore Kristy Bagnall scored a team-high six goals on the day. Senior goalie Leanna Hahn had 14 saves in the two matches.

The Rainbow Wahine take on California, on the second day of the Stanford Invitational, Feb. 8.
