WAIPAHU - The Hawai'i women's tennis team easily defeated NCAA Division III Gustavus Adolphus, 6-1, Friday, at the Central Oahu Tennis Complex, but in the process lost a top player due to an injury.
Junior Justine Boutet went down with a knee injury in her doubles match with Sylvia Jaros and could not continue in singles competition. However, Boutet was able to finish the match against GAC’s Tara Houlihan and Lyndsey Palen, which the Gusties won, 8-2. The Rainbow Wahine continued by winning the doubles point as the team of Lauren Fitzgerald and Paige Mainor beat Marla Menne and Kara Smiley, 8-2, at the No. 2 court. In the third doubles match, Kimberly Curtis and Renata Camargo outlasted Jaime Gaard and Elissa Bashleben, 8-5.
In singles play, the Rainbow Wahine won five of the six matches in straight sets. At the No. 6 court, Camargo won her third consecutive match with a 6-0, 6-1 rout of Hannah Frericks. Freshman Kana Aikawa won her third match in three tries with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Gaard at the No. 5 spot.
UH returns to the mainland where they face New Mexico State, Louisiana Tech, and UTEP, Feb. 13-15.
