Tabion Pitches UH Past Gaels, 1-0

Box Score

HONOLULU - University of Hawaii pitcher Shannon Tabion held St. Mary's scoreless through five innings as the Rainbow Wahine won a nail-biter, 1-0, against St. Mary's in the 8th Hawaii Paradise Classic.

Tabion evened her record at 1-1 striking out four before SMC's Jordann Bass got aboard on an error by UH second baseman Noelle Izumi. Melissa Coogan then came on in relief and retired the final six batters to notch her first save of the spring.

The Rainbow Wahine got its only run in the top of the sixth when Izumi led off with a triple in the right center gap and came home on April Crowell's double to right for the only scoring in the game.

SMC had a golden opportunity to score first in the second inning, but was called out on an appeal play at home plate. Jennifer Arnold led off with a single, went to second on a passed ball, and apparently scored on a single by Shelly Taketa. But UH noticed Arnold did not touched home plate, and when they appealed the play, they got the call.

SMC's Lisa Bautista (0-2) suffered the loss going only five innings before Jennifer Eaton got the final six outs.

Hawaii improves to 3-2 while St. Mary's falls to 1-3. Hawaii secures the No. 3 seed in the tournament and faces No. 2 seed Tennessee Sunday at 1 p.m.
