HONOLULU - Junior pitcher Melissa Coogan and freshman first baseman led the University of Hawai`i to a 3-1 victory over No. 23 Oregon State tonight in the 8th Hawai`i Paradise Classic at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Coogan (2-0) tossed the complete game scattering six hits and allowing one unearned run while fanning five and walking two. She got all of the run support she would need in the first inning.
Second baseman Noelle Izumi got aboard on a one-out single and forced at second on April Crowell's ground out. Then Tausaga towered a shot to deep centerfield for her first career collegiate home run off Oregon State ace Monica Hoffman.
The Beavers would narrow the gap to one when Alana Mendoza reached on a one-out single to left and came home when Brianne McGowan's ground ball to third was throw in the right center field gap by Crowell.
The Rainbow Wahine added an insurance run in the second when Ashley Ruff beat out a nubber out in front of the plate, went to second on Denise Dahlberg's sacrifice bunt, and scored on Justina Kahaku's single.
Hawai`i improved to 2-1 overall and in the tournament while Oregon State fell to 6-2 overall and 2-1 in the HPC.
