Hawai'i Wins Season Opener Over Pacific, 12-5

STOCKTON, Calif. - The Hawai'i women's water polo team opened its 2004 season with a 12-5 victory over Pacific, Thursday night, at the Chris Kjeldsen Pool. The ninth-ranked Rainbow Wahine improved its all-time record against the Tigers to 11-0.

Sophomore Kristy Bagnall and junior Shannon Carroll each posted hat tricks for the Rainbow Wahine.

Hawai‘i got on the scoreboard first with back-to-back goals by Bagnall and Carroll. The Rainbow Wahine dominated the first half, holding the Tigers scoreless until late into the second quarter. After Pacific’s Jessica Melcher scored with 1:29 to play, UH responded with a goal by Danielle Mulford, giving them a commanding 7-1 lead at the half.

The Tigers stood their ground in the third quarter with goals by Melcher and Amanda Tucker to cut the Rainbow Wahine lead to 8-3. Hawai'i responded with quarter-closing goals by Beth Novick and Carroll for a 10-3 advantage.

The two teams traded goals in the fourth quarter. After the Rainbow Wahine picked up its 11th and 12th goals of the match, the Tigers scored two meaningless goals.

The Rainbow Wahine travel to Berkeley, Calif., to face the seventh-ranked Golden Bears of California, Friday, Feb. 6 at 4:30 p.m. PST before competing in this weekend’s Stanford Invitational.
