SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The Hawai'i women's water polo finished seventh at the Gaucho Tournament, after posting a 1-1 record on Sunday, at UC Santa Barbara's Campus Pool. The No. 10 Rainbow Wahine completed the tournament with a 2-2 record after dropping a 10-9 decision to No. 6 California and defeating No. 8 Michigan, 8-7.
Sophomore Kristy Bagnall led the Hawai‘i offense scoring seven goals on the day. Also scoring multiple goals for UH was junior Beth Novick (4) and sophomore Shannon Carroll (2).
The Rainbow Wahine faced off against the Golden Bears for the third time this season. California took an early 4-3 lead in the first period and held on to the one-goal victory.
Later in the day Hawai‘i took on Michigan in the seventh place match. A 12-save performance by senior goalie Amber Lumb and four goals by Bagnall propelled the Rainbow Wahine past the Wolverines, 9-7. A four-goal second period gave the Rainbow Wahine a commanding, 5-3 lead at the half. But Michigan rallied in the fourth period, posting three goals. UH’s strong defense and key goalie saves held off the Michigan comeback and sealed the 9-7 win.
The 10th-ranked Rainbow Wahine improved to 7-7 on the season. UH takes a three-week break before returning to the pool to host the Aloha Classic, Mar. 20-21 at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Center.
