SAN DIEGO, Calif.--Four quarters were not enough again for the University of Hawai`i water polo team, who suffered a tough 11-10 overtime setback, Thursday, to No. 5 San Diego State at Bud Kearns Pool. Hawai`i's third consecutive overtime match and second straight overtime loss drops its record to 4-5, and 1-3 in the MPSF.

Beth Novick posted a complete performance, with four goals and four steals to lead the Rainbow Wahine on both sides of the ball. Senior goalie Amber Lumb came off the bench to make six saves to keep the Aztecs (9-1, 2-0 MPSF) from running away during a six-goal second quarter. Hawai`i held reigning MPSF player of the week Holly Hartzell to only one goal, but could not stop Aztec driver Sandy Onweller, who netted six goals on 13 attempts.

UH took a 2-1 lead after a quiet first quarter, but nearly let the game get out of hand during a SDSU scoring outburst that resulted in the pulling of starting goalie Amber Lumb. The Rainbow Wahine managed to keep pace with the Aztecs, as Kristy Bagnall made two goals on three attempts in the quarter to close the gap to 7-6 heading into halftime.

Novick's third goal of the game drew Hawai`i even in the third quarter, and the teams traded goals in the fourth to send the match into overtime knotted at 9-9. UH's aggressive defense would prove to be its downfall, as Novick, Bagnall, and 2-meter defender Malia Tarayao were all ejected in the extra period after each drawing their third major penalties. Two Onweller overtime goals put SDSU on top, 13-11, with 2:35 left in the match. UH's Shannon Carroll scored at the 1:35 mark to pull the Rainbow Wahine within one, but the undermanned comeback effort fell short.

Hawai`i continues its four-day road trip with a match on Friday, Feb. 27, against No. 16 Arizona State. The match, the Sun Devils first-ever MPSF conference face-off, is set for 2 p.m. PST at Mona Plummer Pool.
