SAN DIEGO - Hawai`i lost to Oregon, 5-2, this morning in its opening game of the Campbell/Cartier Classic at San Diego State.
UH's Melissa Coogan (2-5) took the loss lasting only five-plus innings allowing five hits and four (3 earned) runs. She struckout four and walked four. Paula Blanning went the final two frames giving up four hits and one run.
Oregon's Anissa Meashintubby (2-1) recorded the complete-game victory for the Ducks, who improved to 6-4 on the season. Meashintubby scattered five hits and allowed only one earned run of the two with four strikeouts.
Oregon started the scoring in the first inning when Ann Marie Topps drove home Breanne Sabol on a sacrifice fly to left.
UH tied the game in bottom half of the first when Tracie Uchima singled and advanced to second on the throw in, moved to third on Noelle Izumi's single, and scored on April Crowell's sacrifice bunt.
The Ducks added single runs in the fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh innings. The Rainbow Wahine picked up a second run in the fifth on when Denise Dahlberg singled to short, advanced to second on a passed ball, and scored on the second passed ball of the inning by Duck catcher Jenn Poore.
The Ducks stranded 11 runners on base to only three for the Rainbow Wahine. Hawaii`i (5-9) lost its third-straight game and plays Ohio University later in the day.
