LOS ANGELES - The University of Hawai`i dropped a pair of non-conference games at Loyola Marymount today by scores of 5-1 and 4-3.
UH falls to 5-8 on the year and heads for San Diego State for this weekend's Campbell/Cartier Classic. LMU improves to 6-3 on the season.
In the first game, LMU used a 12-hit attack while Lion pitcher Sami Strinz (3-2) went the distance limiting UH to six hits while striking out four and walking one. Four LMU batters had multiple-hit games, including a two-run home run by Emily Foltz in the sixth inning.
UH's Melissa Coogan (2-4) suffered the loss lasting only 5.1 innings allowing 10 hits and all five runs. Paula Blanning recorded the final two outs in relief.
shley Ruff went 2-for-3 at the plate hitting her first career home run in the fifth inning.
In the second game, scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning off UH starter Shannon Tabion (3-1) handing the junior her first loss of the season.
UH got on the board quickly in the first inning off LMU's Samantha Lavino (2-0) highlighted by a two-run single by Stacey Ritter.
However, LMU battled back for a single run in the second and two more in the fourth on a two-run homer by Sami Strinz.
The Rainbow Wahine tied the game up in the sixth when Ritter singled and was pinch-run for by Tara Harbert. Kea Yamaguchi sacrificed her to second, moved to third on a ground out, and scored on Ruff's single to left.
LMU's Casie Phillips led off the seventh with a single to center and was pinch-run for by Margo Pineda. Foltz sacrificed her to second, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored a sacrifice fly to left by Brittany Bassett.
