UH Knocks off No. 13 DePaul in 8 Innings, 8-7

Box Score

HENDERSON, Nev. - Hawai`i scored three times in the eighth inning and Melissa Coogan went the distance as the Rainbow Wahine won its second consecutive extra-inning contest at the Rebel Classic against No. 13 DePaul, 8-7.

Hawai`i (5-6) trailed 3-0 to DePaul (1-4) entering the bottom of the third inning. UH loaded the bases as the first three batters - Justina Kahaku, Tracie Uchima, and Noelle Izumi - each reached base on singles off DePaul starter Sarah Martz. Tyleen Tausaga and Stacey Ritter each drove in runs on sacrifice flies to pull UH to within one, 3-2.

DePaul added two more runs in the sixth to take a 5-2 lead, but UH scratched and clawed its way back with three runs in the bottom of the sixth highlighted by two-run double by Tausaga.

That set up the eighth inning. DePaul opened the top of the eighth with two runs on Linda Secka's two run shot to right.

UH's dramatic bottom of the inning began with Kahaku was placed at second on the international tie-breaker rule, moved to third on Izumi's bunt single and scored when the second baseman muffed a throw. April Crowell then doubled to center to tie the game at seven. After Ritter was hit by a pitch, Denise Dahlberg doubled home Crowell with the winning run.

Coogan improved to 3-3 on the season.

Hawaii now heads to Los Angles to take on Loyola Marymount in a doubleheader on Tuesday before they start play in the Campbell/Cartier Softball Tournament at San Diego State next weekend.
