FT. COLLINS, Colo. - The No. 2 University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine (30-0) swept through the Purdue Boilermakers (17-15) 33-31, 30-27 and 30-19 at Moby Arena Friday to advance to the program's 21st NCAA Regional.
Susanne Boogaard again stepped up for the Rainbow Wahine, hitting .375 with 13 kills and 10 digs. Alicia Arnott added 14 kills and nine digs while Victoria Prince hit .467 with seven kills and six blocks. Teisa Fotu led the way in the backrow with 15 digs and two aces, while Kanoe Kamana`o kept her great season going, finishing with 43 assists, 14 digs and four blocks.
Hawai`i got the lead early in game one as Prince served the Rainbow Wahine to a 5-0 run to put hem up 6-2. Purdue clawed their way back into the match, holding a 15-13 lead at the media timeout. The Boilermakers got their advantage up to six points at 21-15 before UH took a 9-2 run to get the lead back at 24-23. Hawai`i got to their first game point at 29-28 on a kill by Arnott. But Purdue battled, holding off three game points before a block by Boogaard and Prince put it away, 33-31. Boogaard ended the first game with five kills on just six attempts, hitting .833.
The Rainbow Wahine again got hot early in game two, using a 10-3 run to go up 12-6. Hawai`i got their lead as high as 18-10 before the Boilermakers stormed back with a 5-1 run, cutting it to 19-15. UH kept their edge around four points for most of the rest of the way, getting to game point at 29-25. Purdue fought off a couple game points before Arnott slammed away the game-winner at 30-27.
The Boilermakers kept their fight at the start of game three, holding UH to an 18-18 tie. But after a kill by Prince, defensive specialist Kelly Ong took the serve and ran with it, scoring 10-straight points on her serve, including two aces, to put Hawai`i at match point at 29-18. After a Purdue kill, the Boilermakers served long to ensure the UH victory 30-19.
The Rainbow Wahine will return home Saturday before flying out to Green Bay, Wis., for the NCAA Regional on Tuesday, Dec. 7. Their first match will be agains the winner of tomorrow's Wisconsin-Notre Dame match.
