WAIKOLOA, Hawai'i - University of Hawai'i sophomore
Derrick Lajola dropped his first round match to Brendan Evans, 6-3, 6-0, Tuesday, at the USTA Waikoloa Futures tournament at the Hilton Waikoloa Village. Lajola earned a special wild-card into the 32-player Main Draw and bypassed the Qualifying Round.
Lajola was one of eight UH tennis players who competed in the single elimination singles tournament. Junior Bryon Weinberg advanced to the Main Draw after winning three of his Qualifying Round matches during the weekend. Weinberg defeated teammate Jarrod Diepraam in the Qualifying Round finals on Monday for one of eight qualifier spots into the Main Draw.
Weinberg faces Nathan Price in a first round match on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. In addition, he and Diepraam withdrew from the Qualifying Round finals after Diepraam suffered a shoulder injury. The duo advanced to the finals after rallying past Darren Emery and William Lynch, 2-6, 6-0, 6-0 on Monday.
Lajola teamed up with A.J. Bartlett in doubles competition and suffered a 6-1, 6-1 defeat to Manuel Kost and Markus Schiller in Qualifying on Monday.
