Weinberg Advances to USTA Futures Main Draw

WAIKOLOA, Hawai'i - University of Hawai'i junior Bryon Weinberg defeated teammate Jarrod Diepraam, 6-1, 6-3, Monday, to earn one of eight qualifier spots in the USTA Waikoloa Futures tournament, this week, at the Waikoloa Village. Weinberg advanced out of the Qualifying Round by winning three matches and is the lone Rainbow Warrior remaining in the tournament.

Weinberg will meet Nathan Price in the first round. The winner will move on to face the Manuel Kost and sixth-seeded Horia Tecau winner.

In addition, both Weinberg and Diepraam are pairing together for a spot in the doubles Main Draw. They will face Kost and Markus Schiller in the Qualifying Round finals.

Overall the Hawai‘i men’s tennis team performed fairly well in the tournament, as four of the seven players who participated, won at least one singles match. Diepraam won his first round match and was awarded a free trip into the finals when his second round opponent (Price) was automatically bumped into the Main Draw.

Of the eight qualifiers who earned spots into the 32-player Main Draw, all were seeded except for Weinberg. Also participating in the Main Draw is former Rainbow Warrior Malino Oda (1999-2003). He and brother Kula Oda (1994-97) are participating in the doubles Main Draw.
