Final Results
KAHUKU, Hawai'i- Despite the toughest conditions of the event, the University of Hawai'i men's golf team shot 295 in the final round to surpass UNLV and claim first place in the UH/Turtle Bay Intercollegiate. This is the second consecutive year that the Warriors finished their fall season with a victory at the Turtle Bay event. Sophomore
Cody Wolfenbarger lead UH through all three days and brought home the first individual title of the season with a three-round score of 206, 10 strokes below par.
"The conditions were really tough going into today," Head Coach Ronn Miyashiro said after the final results were in. "I told the guys that we would probably have to shoot eight-under to get the win, but when it came down to it and we saw the conditions, I thought shooting about even would be enough. It just became a matter of hanging on because nobody blew-up. We just held our ground and didn't fall apart."
Wolfenbarger continued to distance himself from the 105-man field in the third round, as he fired a one-under-par 71 to solidify his first -place finish. Junior golfer Jarett Hamamoto, who transferred from Air Force to UH, shot a three-over 75 in the final round to finish the event tied for eighth place, which marked his second top-ten performance of the season. Also golfing for UH's "A" team were sophomore Pierre-Henri Soero (222, +6) and seniors Ben Douglas (223, +7) and Kellen-Floyd Asao (224, +8).
Senior Manarii Gauthier, who led UH to victory at the 2003 UH/Turtle Bay Intercollegiate, was the top finisher on UH's "B" team this year, as he finished in a tie for 57th with a 54-hole total of 227. Also representing UH's "B" team were junior Travis Toyama (228, +12), freshmen Billy Bob Hoyt (228, +12) and Ryan Perez (230, +14) and sophomore Scot Miller (240, +24). Freshman Chase Bingham competed as an individual and finished the three-day event tied for 86th with a 54-hole total of 234.
UNLV, who began the third round in first place, shot 301 on the final day to fall to second place with a three-day total of 865, one stroke above par. UC Riverside rounded out the top three spots with 866. The Warrior golf team will take a few months off before they begin their spring season on Feb. 9-11 when they travel to the Big Island to compete in the UH-Hilo-hosted Waikaloa Intercollegiate.
