Warriors in Action on Day 1 of Honolulu Futures

HONOLULU - Six members of the Hawai'i men's tennis team were in action on Day 1 of the USTA Honolulu Futures Qualifying Round at Diamond Head Racquet Club and Ala Moana courts, Saturday. Two matches featured head-to-head competition between members of the current squad.

Freshman Taylor Tsao edged teammate Yasuo Sakurai, 6-3, 6-2, in first round of qualifying. He will face former Rainbow Warrior Malino Oda, Sunday, in the second round.

Senior Dalibor Ptak defeated junior Bryon Weinberg, 6-2, 6-4, to also advance to the second round. Last week, Weinberg secured a berth into the Waikoloa Futures Main Draw by winning all three of his Qualifying Round matches. Ptak will face Robert Frantz in the second round.

Freshman Colin Simpson lost his first round match to Brandon Christopher, 1-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5) while sophomore Jamie Migia dropped a 6-1, 6-1 decision to Oliver Statham. Both are eliminated from the tournament.

Other Rainbow Warriors participating in the event are Travis Smith, Ryan Sceats, Chad Faulk, and Derrick Lajola, all of whom received first round byes. Smith will face Dennis Rasmussen, Sceats will meet Anthony Law, and Lajola plays Tim Smyczek in second round action on Sunday.
