HONOLULU - Senior
Lauren Fitzgerald posted the biggest upset of her collegiate career after a 6-2, 7-6 (7) victory over Arizona's Dianne Hollands, who is ranked No. 7 in the preseason ITA rankings, Thursday. The victory occurred in UH's hidden dual match against the Wildcats on the second day of the Rainbow Wahine Invitational at the UH Tennis Complex.
Fitzgerald was the lone bright spot for the Rainbow Wahine. Arizona won the other four singles matches and all three doubles contests.
"Despite the outcome, I thought we had a good showing," head coach Carolyn Katayama said. "It was an awesome victory for Lauren. She was working the ball well and she had amazing confidence. You could tell the way she was hitting the ball. She'll surprise a lot of people this year."
The match does not count in the team's overall records. Only individual match results will count toward each player's records.
Earlier in the day, Texas A&M took all 10 matches against Texas State. The tournament concludes Saturday, with Texas State facing Arizona at 9:00 a.m. and UH hosting Texas A&M at 1:30 p.m.
