HONOLULU - The Hawai'i men's tennis team opened the newly renovated UH Tennis Complex in grand fashion by defeating UC Davis, 6-1, Friday afternoon. The victory was the Rainbow Warriors’ first dual match of the 2004-05 season.

The teams started off with the six singles matches first, which UH won four of the five in straight sets. Senior Dalibor Ptak put the Rainbow Warriors on the board first with a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Michael Chin at No. 1. Junior Ryan Sceats, who played much of his first two seasons at the Nos. 1 and 2 courts, swept Jordan Combs at the No. 3 ladder.

Newcomer Chad Faulk made a successful UH debut with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Bastian Bartels at the No. 4 position. Junior Bryon Weinberg continued his hot start with a 6-4, 0-6, 6-2 victory over Jayce Fitch at No. 2.

With UH holding an insurmountable 5-1 lead after singles play, the Rainbow Warriors captured the doubles point after the Nos. 1 and 2 teams won their matches.

“I’m pleased with our teams’ effort,” head coach John Nelson said. “It was our first match in a brand new facility and this was our best mental energy we’ve had as a team since I’ve been here. They played a lot smarter and did the things they needed to do to win this match.”

The Rainbow Warriors returned to their on-campus facility after spending last season at the Central Oahu Regional Park while the UH Tennis Complex was undergoing a multi-million dollar renovation. While the Complex will eventually feature 12 new courts, only six have been completed and the remainder will finish by the end of the month.
