FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State took the home field advantage in what has become a traditional Western Athletic Conference rivalry and ran with it to beat Hawai`i, 70-14, Friday night at Bulldog Stadium.
Hawai`i (4-5, 4-4 WAC) suffered its fifth-straight road loss and are winless on the road (0-4) for the first time since the 2000 season (0-4).
The lone bright spot of the evening came in the second quarter when slot receiver Chad Owens became the school's career all-purpose yards leader on an 11-yard reception in the second quarter. Warrior quarterback Timmy Chang finished the game with completing 26-of-43 passes for 167 yards. Fresno State (6-3, 3-3 WAC) took command from the start, scoring touchdowns on seven of its first eight possessions of the game, three by tailback Bryson Sumlin, to take a 49-0 lead in the first half. It is the worst first-half deficit in the modern era of UH football.
Sumlin gained a career-high 210 yards in the first half, while the Bulldogs out-gained the Warriors 512 to 134 before the break.

Hawai`i scored its first touchdown of the game on a 18-yard run by running back Michael Brewster in the third quarter. The score was set-up by an interception by defensive end Kila Kamakawiwo`ole, the first of his career, which gave the Warriors the ball in Bulldog territory for the first time in the game.
Jason Rivers scored a late touchdown on a 6-yard reception from Chang with 9:01 left in the game.
Watson Ho`ohuli came up big on the defensive side of the ball collecting a career-high 15 tackles (13 solo), including two for a loss of yardage.
