KAHUKU, Oahu - Sophomore
Cody Wolfenbarger shot a three-under-par 69 to lead the Hawai`i Warrior golf team to fifth place after the first round of the Turtle Bay Intercollegiate at the Turtle Bay Resort.
Hawai`i shot a three-over-par 291 on the day, putting them in fifth, just five strokes behind UNLV, who took the tournament lead with a two-under-par 286. Central Oklahoma and UC-Riverside are tied for second at one-under-par, while Virginia shot a one-over-par 289 to hold the fourth-place spot after day one.
Wolfenbarger is currently tied for second individually, just two shots behind tournament-leader Brendan Steele of UC Riverside. He was joined by teammates Jarett Hamamoto (72, even, t-11), Pierre-Henri Soero (75, +3, t-46), Kellen Floyd-Asao (75, +3, t-46) and Ben Douglas (76, +4, t-58).
The Hawai`i B team finished the day with a 15-over-par 303, good for 15th in the 19-team field. Billy Bob Hoyt led the B team with a two-over-par 74, good for a tie for 30th. Ryan Perez (76, +4, t-58), Travis Toyama (76, +4, t-58), Manarii Gauthier (77, +5, t-68) and Scot Miller (82, +10, t-98) also competed for the B team.
The tournament continues tomorrow with UH's five golfers on the A team going out from 8:20 a.m. to 9 a.m. on the first hole and the five from the B team going out from 8:40 a.m. to 9:20 a.m. on the 10th hole.
