UH Harriers Finish Strong at Triton Classic

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The Hawai'i women's cross country team posted a fourth place finish in the 13th Annual UC San Diego Triton Cross Country Classic, Saturday, on the 6K UCSD Cross Country Course. Competing in the Division I competition, the Rainbow Wahine had its strongest showing of the season in its longest meet.

Freshman Sabrina Reeve made an impressive UH debut, finishing seventh overall with a time of 22:46. Followed closely behind were sophomore Chantelle Laan (23:19, 14th) and Dana Buchanan (23:29, 16th). Rounding out the team qualifiers were Kelly Young (24:15, 27th) and Danielle Binns (25:21, 46th).

"It was good to finally get out there," Reeve said about her first career collegiate competition. "I was really unsure how I was going to do but I think it went well. Everyone seems to be pleased with our results so I think it was a success."

The Rainbow Wahine beat out seven other Division I programs. Oklahoma State won the meet followed by Portland and UCLA. The Cowgirls landed four runners in the Top 10, including individual winner Mary Davies (21:21).

Other UH runners were Heather Scott (26:20, 56th) and Chelsee Pummel (27:15, 69th).

"It was a great day for cross country," associate coach Andy McInnis said. "It was a tough course with lots of terrain changes. Its the only cross country course in all of California as far as a trail-running. There were areas where there was sandy terrain but our girls handled it well."

The Rainbow Wahine return home to host the Sprint Invitational, Saturday, Oct. 16, at the Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course.
