BOISE, Idaho - On a night of anticipated celebration, when Hawai`i quarterback
Timmy Chang was scheduled to break the NCAA career passing record, the Warriors (3-4, 3-3 WAC) suffered one of the worst losses in school history, 69-3, to 18th-ranked Boise State, Friday night before a national television audience on ESPN2 and 29,591 at Bronco Stadium.
Boise State (8-0, 5-0 WAC) won its 23rd straight Western Athletic Conference game and extended the nation's longest current win streak to 19 games to remain undefeated on the season.
Chang, who finished 14 yards short of the record, did manage to become the NCAA career leader in total offense in the first half. The senior from Waipahu, Oahu, has compiled 14,809 yards, surpassing Ty Detmer's (BYU) record of 14,665. Chang finished the game with 227 passing yards (26-of-53) and four interceptions, and did not throw a touchdown pass for the first time since Nov. 29, 2003, against Alabama, a game he didn't finish.
Hawai`i scored on its first possession of the game to take an early, 3-0, lead on a 38-yard field goal by Justin Ayat. But Boise State answered with 24 points in the half, including two touchdowns by quarterback Jared Zabrabsky, to take a 24-3 lead into the locker room. The Broncos used a little trickery, pulling a surprise onside kick to regain possession after taking a 14-3 lead.
The scoring continued in the second half. Boise State scored 10 quick points, a field goal by Jones to open the half and a touchdown on a four-yard run by Jon Helmandollar, after Chang tossed an interception on Hawai`i's first possession. The Broncos added seven points on a 38-yard touchdown run by tailback Quinton Jones, to make it 41-3 midway through the third quarter.
Chang threw another interception in the third quarter, allowing Zabransky to score his third touchdown of the night on a one-yard run to put Boise State ahead, 48-3. Zabransky would add a 85-yard touchdown run, the longest run in school history, later in the quarter, as the quarterback totaled four rushing touchdowns and 287 yards of total offense.
In all, the Broncos ran off 38 points in the third quarter, on five rushing touchdowns and a field goal. They added another touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 50-yard interception for a touchdown by Chris Barrios, making the final score 69-3.
The Broncos ended up with 589 yards of total offense, the most by a UH opponent all season, while holding Hawai`i to a season-low 300 yards of total offense. They also forced six Hawai`i turnovers on five interceptions and one fumble lost.
Hawai`i safety Leonard Peters ended the game with a career-high 16 tackles. Jason Rivers had a season-high nine catches for 80 yards.
