KAPOLEI, Hawai'i-- While playing host to 14 visiting schools, in town for the Kent Youel Invitational, the Rainbow Wahine finished day one on the 6,033-yard Kapolei Golf Course in 15th place. UH ended day one with a two-round total of 641.
Sophomore Dale Gammie lead the Rainbow Wahine through the first two rounds, as she finished the day tied for 22nd on the leader board. Gammie, a native of Pukalani, Maui, shot a one-over 73 in the first round, which landed her in 14th. After a five-over 77 in round two, Gammie fell eight spots to 22nd, where she now awaits tomorrow's final round. Also competing for UH are; junior Tara Chappell (161, +17), freshman Xyra Suyetsugu and sophomore Megan Stoddart (165, +21) and junior Allie Rowe (169, +25). UH golfers competing as individuals, which means that their scores will not be counted towards UH's team score, are juniors Roslyn Folk (167, +23), a transfer from Albertson College of Idaho, and Kari Sur (171, +27). Due to an injury suffered in the New Mexico State Invitational, sophomore Sara Odelius was forced to miss her first competition since joining the University of Hawai`i last season.
UCLA has managed to distance themselves from the 15-team field by 16 strokes through two rounds. The Bruins sit atop the team leader board with a 36-hole total of 568, eight strokes below par. Arizona State, who sits in second place with 584, is their closest competitor. UCLA's Charlotte Mayorkas fired a three-under-par 69 in round one and a two-under 70 in round two, which was good enough to give her sole possession of first place. Trailing Mayorkas by one stroke is teammate Amie Cochran, who posted back-to-back 70s in the first and second rounds. Action will continue Wednesday morning as the 15 teams get set for the third and final round at Kapolei Golf Course.
