HONOLULU - The No. 2 University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine (5-1) swept the Wichita State Shockers (2-2) 30-17, 30-20 and 30-18 on the first night of the Aston Imua Challenge Thursday in front of a crowd of 6,118 at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Kim Willoughby led the way for Hawai`i, putting away 22 kills, three aces and four blocks while hitting .724. Nohealani Tano hit .700 with eight kills while Maja Gustin had six kills on seven attempts for a .857 hitting percentage.
Hawai`i jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the first game as Willoughby scored three kills on her first four attempts. The Rainbow Wahine would keep the pressure on, taking their lead to 18-7 to force Wichita State to use their final timeout of the game. UH would stay in control, taking game one 30-17.
Wichita State held it close at the start of game two, as Hawai`i took a 15-10 lead into the media timeout. From there the Rainbow Wahine kept inching their way to the end, taking the second game 30-20.
UH jumped out to a 13-5 lead to start game three off seven straight serves by Alicia Arnott. Hawai`i would get their lead up to 20-8 before letting the Shockers get a couple of small runs late. But it wouldn't be nearly enough as UH took the third game 30-18.
The challenge continues tomorrow as Wichita State plays Pacific in the 5 p.m. match, followed by a match between Hawai`i and Baylor at approximately 7 p.m. The Bears fell to Pacific in four games in the early match.
