ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.-- The University of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine golf team placed 15th at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational hosted by the University of New Mexico. UH totaled 952 (323-303-326, +76) failing to make up any ground in the third and final round.
A pair of freshman were the top performers for UH. Dale Gammie, from Pukalani, Maui, led the team with a total of 237 (+18) to finish in a tie for 47th. Swedish import Sara Odelius had the best final round of the group with a 7-over 80, to finish one stroke behind Gammie at 238. Sophomore Tara Chappell also finished with a total of 238 to finish in a tie for 52nd.
Rounding out the scores for the Rainbow Wahine were senior Rene Krause (+20, T57 place) and sophomore Kari Sur (+49, 96th place).
Host New Mexico took the team championship with a three-day total of 871 (-5) to win by 16 strokes over second place Oklahoma State. New Mexico's Kailin Downs defeated Oklahoma State's Karin Sjodin for the individual title by three strokes, finishing with a 7-under 212.
UH next plays in the Price's Collegiate Women's Golf Invitational hosted by New Mexico State, October 6-8.
