ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.-- The University of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine golf team opened the 2003-04 season by shooting 323 (+31) in the opening round of the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational hosted by the University of New Mexico. Leading the Rainbow Wahine are senior
Rene Krause and
Dale Gammie, who both shot seven-over par.
Both Krause and Gammie stand in a tie for 50th place. Also competing for the Rainbow Wahine are freshman Sara Odelius (+8, T61 place), sophomore Tara Chappell (+9, T72 place) and sophomore Kari Sur (+15, 93rd place). Par for The Championship Course is 73 while the total yardage is 6,069 yards.
Host New Mexico shot a 3-over 295 to build a five-stroke lead in the 17-team tournament. No. 13 Oklahoma State is in second place with an eight-over 300 while Pepperdine is in third with a 14-over 306. Lobo junior Kailin Downs, fired a 3-under 70 with three birdies to top the individual leaderboard.
Round two of the three-round Dick McGuire Invitational continues tomorrow with tee times beginning at 8:30 a.m.
