'Bows Beat Spartans in 11 Innings, 7-6

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (30-25, 11-18 WAC) defeated the San Jose State Spartans (24-32, 9-19 WAC) 7-6 in 11 innings in front of a crowd of 564 at the San Jose Municipal Stadium Saturday. Clary Carlsen (4-3) pitched 4.2 innings in relief for his second win in two days. Jose Amaya (4-6) took the loss for San Jose State.

The win gave the Rainbows their first 30-win season since 1999 and their first series on the road since 2001. It also guaranteed Hawai`i that they would finish no lower than tied for fourth in the WAC this season.

Brian Bock led the way for the 'Bows, going 2-for-5 with three RBI and a double. Jaziel Mendoza kept up his hot hitting, going 2-for-5 with a run, while Matthew Inouye added a 1-for-4 day with three runs scored and a double.

The Rainbows jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a two-run double by Bock. San Jose State would come back to score one run in the fourth and two more in the fifth, giving the Spartans a 3-2 lead after five innings.

Hawai`i would quickly come back to tie the game in the top of the sixth, as Joshua Green sacraficed in Inouye.

San Jose State would again take the lead in the seventh with two runs, but UH would add two more as Bock and Green would drive in a run each, tying the game at five.

Neither team would score in the ninth inning, sending the game into extra innings. In the 11th inning, the Rainbows would pick up two runs when Brent Cook reached on an error, scoring Daniel Magana and Arthur Guillen drove in Cook.

Kevin Frandson would hit a solo home run with two outs in the bottom of the 11th, but Carlsen would get the final Spartan out 5-to-3, ending the game 7-6.

The two teams will close out their respective seasons tomorrow with a 12 noon start time. Note that gametime has changed to accommodate UH's travel plans. Keahi Rawlins will start tomorrow against San Jose State's Frank Esposito.
