RUSTON, LA. - The University of Hawai'i cut its Magic Number to 2 to win the program's first Western Athletic Conference title as the Rainbow Wahine defeated Louisiana Tech, 6-3 and 8-3, in a very hot and humid night at the Lady Techster's Softball Complex.
Sophomore Melissa Coogan (28-9) pitched both ends of the doubleheader to raise her league record to 13-1.
In the first game, Coogan spaced eight hits and three runs. She walked three and struckout three in the win.
Hawai'i (35-18, 15-3 WAC) crossed the plate twice in the second inning behind three La. Tech errors and a sacrifice fly by Tracie Uchima.
The Lady Techsters (16-36, 6-8) tied it up in the third on doubles by Amber Miles, Bridget Broadnax, and Casey Reiff.
UH added a single run in the as Stacey Porter led off with her 15th homer of the season. UH tacked on three more run in the seventh off La. Tech starter Marla Pinkston (11-16) highlight by 2-run homer by Kate Judd.
La. Tech scored once in the seventh and had the tying run at the plate, but Coogan got Broadnax to ground out to end the threat.
In the second game, UH jumped all over La. Tech starter Kristin Rupp (5-17) for five runs in 2.2 innings giving way to Pinkston (1.1 ip), and Sabra Warner (3.0 ip).
Judd continued her torid ways going 3-for-4 at the plate with a RBI and scored twice. Trisha Ramos broke out with a solid 2-for-4 effort, including a homer, three RBI, and a pair of runs.
Coogan scattered 10 hits while striking out six and walking two in the second contest.
UH ends the regular season Saturday with a WAC doubleheader against Louisiana Tech. Hawai'i may clinch its first-ever WAC title with a pair of wins and gain the conference's automatic berth into the NCAA Womens' Softball Regionals in two weeks.
