FRESNO, CALIF. - Hawai`i (21-16, 2-2 WAC) dropped a pair of Western Athletic Conference softball games today losing 7-0 and 6-0 at Fresno State (20-17, 2-2 WAC).
Melissa Coogan (16-9) took the loss going the distance allowing 12 hits, seven runs (two earned), while striking out one and walking two. Across the diamond, Jamie Southern (12-9) three-hit the Rainbow Wahine while going on to strike out nine.
FSU got the scoring underway in the first inning as Christine Clark walked, moved to second on a sacrifice, went to third on a ground out, and scored on Southern's double to right center.
The Bulldogs added another run in the third on Elizabeth Pierce's RBI single.
The flood gates opened up in the fifth as FSU sent eight batters to the plate and when the smoke cleared, five runs had scored. The big hits in the inning was delivered by Lori Hoffman with a two-run single. UH committed two huge errors in the frame allowing four of the five runs as unearned.
In the second game, the Bulldog bats stayed hot.
UH's Paula Blanning (1-1) got the starting nod for the second day in a row. She faced four batters in the fifth inning allowing four hits and six runsw (four earned) while striking out one and walking two.
Defense plagued the Rainbow Wahine again as they committed three miscues.
FSU got on the board in the third as the Bulldogs scored two unearned runs on three UH errors.
Fresno State blew open the game in the fourth sending up eight batters and plating four runs. The highlight of the inning was Anglina Diaz's two-run single.
FSU's Southern went the distance for the third time in two days, including the first game today. She scattered six hits and struckout five with no walks.
"We did what we want to accomplish at Fresno State, which was a split," head coach Bob Coolen said. "It was a little disappointing today that we didn't play with any fire."
Hawai`i returns home for its final homestand of the season, a 12-game WAC set against Nevada, Tulsa, and San Jose State.
