Rainbow Wahine Split After Day One at MPSF Tournament

STANFORD, Calif. - After the first day of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament, the No. 6 seed Rainbow Wahine water polo team are 1-1. Despite starting the day off defeating Pacific 8-3, the Rainbow Wahine could not hold off UCLA, losing 3-12.

In UH's first match to No. 11 seed Pacific, sophomore Beth Novick led the Rainbow Wahine with four goals, to a victory over the Tigers. Novick scored the only two goals within the last minute of the first quarter and added another goal in the second quarter to give UH a 3-1 halftime advantage. In the second half the Rainbow Wahine then outscored Pacific 5-2, with Novick, Chelsea Garner-Prohs, Erin Kocher, Tamara Molina, and Malia Tarayao all contributing to the 8-3 win.

With the win over Pacific, UH advanced to take on No.3 seed UCLA. Against the Bruins, the Rainbow Wahine fell behind early allowing nine goals while scoring three by halftime. After the break, UCLA held Hawai`i scoreless for the remainder of the match, sealing the 12-3 win. UCLA's Natalie Golda had a match high of four goals. Garner-Prohs was the high scorer for Hawai`i with two goals.

Hawai`i is scheduled to face No. 7 seed San Diego State in day two action of the MPSF Tournament on Saturday, Apr. 26, at 3:30 p.m. The Rainbow Wahine defeated San Diego State 4-3 earlier this month in regular season play. A victory over the Aztecs, would advance Hawai`i to the tournament's fifth place game on Sunday.
