PROVO, Utah — The University of Hawaii men’s golf squad is in 10th place following the first day of the 2003 PING Cougar Classic at Riverside Country Club. The Warriors carded a total of 596 (+20) through the first two rounds on Friday.
James Beston and Kellen-Floyd Asao put up identical scores (72-76=148), shooting four-over-par to top the Warriors. The pair stand in a tie for 28th.
Tournament host BYU heated up in the second round to take a share of the lead with the University of Denver at 567 (-9). The Cougars shot a tournament low six-under-par 282 in the afternoon round and got a boost with a visit from 2003 Masters Champion and former Cougar golfer Mike Weir, who was on the sidelines for part of the afternoon. Individually, Colorado State's Martin Laird holds a four-shot lead (67-69--136) over BYU’s Oscar Alvarez and two others.
Final round play begins Saturday at 8:30 a.m. MST.
