Rainbow Wahine Fall Short at Nevada, 4-3

RENO, Nev. - With wintry weather forcing a time and location change to the University of Hawai'i women's tennis team's match against Nevada, the Rainbow Wahine suffered a heart-breaking 4-3 loss, Sunday. The match was supposed to be played at the outdoor courts on the campus of the University of Nevada but snow and rain delayed the match for seven hours and forced the teams to play in the indoor courts at the Lakeridge Tennis Club.

With the match tied at 3, the outcome would be decided at the No. 6 singles court between UH's Kimberly Curtis and Nevada's Myriam Bouchlaka. After Curtis took the first set, 6-1, Bouchlaka rallied back to take the second set. Both players gave it their all in the final set, and Bouchlaka pulled out an 7-6 victory, winning 8-6 in the 12-point tiebreaker. The victory gave the Wolf Pack the elusive fourth point and capped a marathon dual match which lasted nearly five hours.

The Rainbow Wahine took the early lead, winning two of the three doubles contests. But in singles action, the Wolf Pack won the No. 1, 2, 4, and 6 spots. UH's Stacy Hakikawa easily won her match, 6-0, 6-3 against Kristen Davenport at the No. 3 position and freshman Renata Camargo improved her record to 11-2 with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Cherie Pettersson at the No. 5 court.

Both Lauren Fitzgerald and Mio Fukushima were hard-luck losers in the their matches at the No. 1 and 4 spots, respectively. Fitzgerald came up short 7-5 in the third against Vania Apodaca at the top singles position, while Fukushima dropped a 6-4 decision in the final set of her match against Ines Zouabi at the No. 4 court.

The Rainbow Wahine (10-12, 2-3 WAC) return home in preparation for the WAC Championships in two weeks.
