Rainbow Wahine Edge Spartans, 4-1

RENO, Nev. - The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team defeated San Jose State, 4-1, in a match suspended due to inclement weather, Saturday, on the campus of the University of Nevada. The Rainbow Wahine (10-11, 2-2 WAC) won three of the four completed singles matches and two of three doubles to earn its four points.

Senior Stacy Hakikawa, sophomore Lauren Fitzgerald, and freshman Mio Fukushima each won both of their matches in singles and doubles play. Fitzgerald defeated Noelle Lee, a 2001 graduate of Iolani School, 6-1, 7-6 (5) in No. 1 singles and teamed with sophomore Paige Mainor to defeat Kathy Van and Kerilyn Grant, 8-0, at No. 2 doubles.

Hakikawa easily defeated Whitney Vasu, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 3 singles and partnered with Fukushima for an 8-5 victory over Carol Silverstone and Elke Harms in the No. 3 doubles position. Fukushima picked up her fourth consecutive victory at No. 4 singles with a come-from-behind, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory over Silverstone.

Both Justine Boutet and Kimberly Curtis had their matches suspended due to windy conditions. Freshman Renata Camargo did not start at her usual No. 5 singles spot due to an illness.

The Rainbow Wahine conclude its three-match road trip against Nevada, Sunday.
