Rainbow Wahine Downs Santa Clara, 13-5

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The University of Hawai'i women's water polo team posted its season-high fifth consecutive victory after crushing Santa Clara, 13-5, in a non-conference match Friday afternoon at Leavey Pool. The seventh-ranked Rainbow Wahine improved to 9-11 overall.

Beth Novick once again led the Hawai`i attack with three goals, all during the team's five-goal second quarter. Ten different players scored including senior Karin van Hoff's team-leading 22nd goal during the first period.

The Rainbow Wahine rallied from a 3-2 first period deficit, by out-scoring the Broncos 5-1, to take a 7-4 advantage heading into the intermission. Novick's first goal tied the match at 3, 15 seconds into the quarter. On the team's ensuing possession, her second goal caromed off the crossbar to put the Rainbow Wahine ahead for good. Kristy Bagnell and Audrey Harrer also scored in the period, before Novick's final goal with just :08 remaining.

Head coach Michel Roy went to his bench in the second half, as reserves Margaret Gnadt, Darcy Scott-Hosaka, and Traci Trochinski added goals in the third. Behind goalie Amber Lumb's season-high 11 saves, the Rainbow Wahine shut-out the Broncos in the third and limited them to a late fourth period goal.

The Rainbow Wahine continue its three-match road trip with Mountain Pacific Sports Federation matches against San Jose State, Saturday, and third-ranked Stanford, Sunday.
