The Wahine Drop Two in Final Day at UCSB Gaucho Invitational

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -In the final day of the UC Santa Barbara Gaucho Invitational, the University of Hawai'i Wahine water polo team dropped two matches, falling 4-5 to Cal State, and 7-9 to Loyola Marymount.

In their first game of the day Hawai'i faced fifth ranked Cal State. Both teams fresh from losses the day before, battled in the pool. By the end of the second quarter the score was tied 3-3. Then in the third, the Wahine took the lead holding the Bears scoreless while scoring a goal of their own. Cal State answered back in the fourth, scoring two goals, handing Hawai'i the loss.
Scoring for the Rainbow Wahine were Chelsea Garner-Prohs and Beth Novick. For the second day in a row, Garner-Prohs came up big for the Wahine, scoring 3 goals against Cal State.
In their last match of the Invitational, the Rainbow Wahine went up against Loyola Marymount. The Wahine struggled throughout the match, the Lions outscoring the Rainbows 4-8 at the end of the third. In the fourth the Wahine fought back scoring 3 goals holding the Lions to just one goal. Despite their efforts, the Wahine fell short by just two goals, losing to Loyola Marymount 7-9.
It was a true team effort with, Kristy Bagnell, Karin van Hoff, Shannon Carrroll, Chelsea Garner-Prohs, Beth Novick, and Audrey Harrer all scoring goals against the Lions. The only Wahine to score more than one goal was Bagnell with 2.
Next up the Wahine return home for their first conference match against Pacific March 13 at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
