HONOLULU - Hawaii pitcher
Melissa Coogan shutdown the Buffalo offense, limiting the Bulls to five hits, and lifting the Rainbow Wahine to the Malihini Tournament Championship at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium tonight.
UH took a 1-0 lead on Buffalo starter Stacey Evans (4-3) in the third inning when Marie Jackson doubled to center and scored on Tracie Uchima's single down the right field line.
That proved to be enough as Coogan (11-2) won for the ninth-straight time.
UH added an insurance run in the sixth as Kate Judd drew a one-out walk. Ashley Ruff came in to run for Judd and moved to third on Denise Dahlberg's single to right. UH then pulled off the double steal for its final run.
Coogan, a sophomore, won four games during the weekend and posted a 0.88 ERA. She tossed 24 innings striking out nine and walking one.
UH had five players named to the all-tournament team. Dahlberg (catcher), Noelle Izumi (infielder), Stacey Porter (infielder), Marie Jackson (outfielder), and Coogan (Most Outstanding Pitcher).
Also named to the all-tournament team were: IF-Kim Wilmoth (Baylor), IF-Jessica Kensy (Buffalo), OF-Brittany Bassett (Loyola Marymount), DP-Sarah Caudle (Baylor), and P-Tekae Malandris (Baylor). The Most Outstanding Player went to Kelly Osburn (Baylor).
UH departs Wednesday for the Kia Klassic hosted by Cal State Fullerton running March 13-16.
