Hawai'i Leads Tourney After Second Day

HONOLULU - On the second day of the sixth annual Rainbow Challenge Water Polo Invitational, Saturday, the University of Hawai'i won all three of its matches to remain unbeaten. The Rainbow Wahine lead the eight-team field with a 5-0 record after defeating Long Beach State (4-1-1) in the nightcap.

The Australian Junior women’s team won both of its matches on the day to improve to 3-0-1, setting up the anticipated showdown against Hawai‘i, Sunday, in the tourney’s final match. The Aussies must also face Long Beach State earlier in the day.

The Rainbow Wahine will play three matches against New Zealand (10:20 a.m.), Cal Baptist (11:30 a.m.) and Australia (1:50 p.m.).

Game #11 – Cal Baptist vs. Long Beach State
The Beach scored nine unanswered goals in its 14-3 rout of Cal Baptist. After a Holly Curran goal pulled the Lancers to within 5-3 with 4:26 remaining in the second period, LBSU shut out Cal Baptist the rest of the way. Alison Braden scored both of her goals in the third period.

Game #12 – UC Santa Cruz vs. UC San Diego
After a scoreless first period, Elizabeth Keesey scored two of her three goals in the second, as the Tritons ran away with a 10-2 victory over UC Santa Cruz. The Banana Slugs got on the scoreboard first on a Emily Erskine goal but the Tritons scored the next eight goals to pull away.

Game #13 – Australia vs. Canada
In a battle of unbeatens, Australia held on for a 5-4 victory over Canada. The Aussies scored four third quarter goals, scoring on consecutive possessions by Katie Finucane and Amy Hetzel. The Canadians closed the gap to one, on a Katie Little goal with :02 left in the third. Canada had one last chance to tie but its attempt was saved by Australia’s Sophia Jarred.

LBSU jumped out to a 6-1 lead at the half, en route to an 8-3 victory over New Zealand. Goalkeeper Bri Hawkins limited New Zealand to just three goals while recording14 saves. Drue Wawrzynski, Angelica Garcia and Cassie Azevedo each scored in the second period.

Hawai‘i held Cal Baptist scoreless until midway through the final period in its 8-1 victory. After scoring only once in 12 attempts in the first half, the Rainbow Wahine netted four times in the third, with goals by Kristy Bagnall, Tracy Anderson, Karin van Hoff, and Makana Whitford. Goalkeeper Laura Holshouser posted 12 saves to keep the Lancers in the match.

Game #16 – Canada vs. UC San Diego
The Tritons rallied from a two-goal deficit, scoring three times in the fourth period for a 9-8 victory over Canada. Samara Silverman scored the game-winner, breaking a 7-7 tie with 2:46 remaining in the match. With just under a minute to play, Canada’s Marina Radu recorded her third goal. Canada had an opportunity to tie the match in its final possession but goalkeeper Andrea Cornford came up with her 10th save to secure the victory.

Tracy Anderson’s goal with :48 remaining secured Hawai‘i’s 6-4 victory over New Zealand. Jodene Birch and Sarah Bell each scored in the fourth to pull New Zealand to within one at 5-4. Six different players scored for the Rainbow Wahine. Goalkeeper Josie Giffney recorded a tournament-record 17 saves for New Zealand.

Cal Baptist scored the first six goals of the match in its 12-3 victory over UC Santa Cruz, picking up its only win of the tournament. Holly Curran recorded three first quarter goals and another in the second. The Lancers built a 9-3 halftime lead and behind goalkeeper Toni Cudney’s 10 saves, held the Banana Slugs scoreless in the second half.

Australia scored four goals in the second period, including a pair by Ashleigh Miller, in its 7-4 victory over UC San Diego. The Tritons closed to 5-4 on goals by Elizabeth Keesey and Dana Tucker. But the Aussies shut the door on a pair of goals by Amy Hetzel in the final minute of the third.

UH stormed out to a 5-0 lead in its 10-6 victory over Long Beach State, in a battle of unbeatens. Karin van Hoff scored two first quarter goals and Chelsea Garner-Prohs added two in the second. The 49ers played their “B” team, while the Rainbow Wahine played almost its entire roster.
