Bauer Pitches a Gem in Rainbows' 9-1 Victory

HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (15-12) beat the Western Illinois Leathernecks (9-11) 9-1 in front of a crowd of 2,390 at the Les Murakami Stadium Tuesday. Ricky Bauer (2-1) pitched a complete game, giving up just six hits and one run while striking out six and walking none to get the victory. Steve Whitson (1-3) took the loss for the Leathernecks.

Timothy Montgomery had a big day, going 2-for-3 with a home run and two runs. Isaac Omura extended his hitting streak to 12 games, going 2-for-5 with a triple, two runs and one RBI. Brian Finegan also went 2-for-5 with a triple, two runs and two RBI, while Andrew Sansaver added a 2-for-4 game with a double, a triple, two RBI and a run. Joshua Green went 2-for-4, but ended his streak of plate appearances with a hit at five.

Omura opened up the scoring in the second inning, as he hit a triple down the rightfield line, bringing in Montgomery. Finegan and Sansaver then hit back-to-back RBI hits to put the Rainbows up 3-0.

Finegan then drove in another run on a triple to rightfield before Sansaver sacraficed in his second RBI, making the score 5-0 after four innings.

The Leathernecks would score a run in the top of the sixth. But that was all they would get off of Bauer as the sophomore pitched a complete game, throwing just 75 pitches, with 61 of them being for strikes. Green then hit a single that scored Brent Cook, before an error later in the play scored Rocky Russo, putting UH up 7-1.

The 'Bows would add two more runs in the bottom of the seventh on Montgomery's fifth home run of the season and on a run-scoring triple by Cook, making the final score 9-1.

UH will play Lewis-Clark State tomorrow at 6:35 p.m. with Nicholas Ponomarenko (3-0) starting against Lewis-Clark State's Marc Keiser (4-1). The Warriors defeated Air Force 4-3 earlier in the day. Western Illinois will play Air Force in the 2:30 p.m. game.
