HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i pounded out 12 hits, including two home runs en route to a 10-4 victory over No. 16 Ohio State in the consolation game of the Hawai`i Invitational at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Melissa Coogan (14-6) notched the complete-game win scattering six hits while striking out two and walking one. Ohio State's Katie Chain (6-5) suffered the loss.
Two OSU errors led to UH's first run in the first. In the second, UH exploded for six more highlighted by back-to-back homers by Stacey Porter, a 3-run blast to left center, followed by a solo shot to left by Kate Judd.
UH would tack on another run in the third to make it 8-0 before the Buckeyes got on the board with lead off homer by Rogeanna Hottinger to left center.
Hawai`i added two runs as April Crowell led off with a double to right, advanced to third on Porter's single and scored on Trisha Ramos' sacrifice fly to center. Porter then capped the UH scoring plating on Dahlberg's RBI single to left center.
Hawai`i improved to 17-12 on the season and heads to the East Coast next week for its longest road trip of the season making stops at the Tar Heel Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C., March 29-30, a doubleheader with UNC-Greensboro April 1, then returning to the West Coast for Western Athletic Conference games with Fresno State April 4-5.
