USC Topples Rainbow Wahine, 4-8

HONOLULU- Amidst the first day of the Aloha Classic Water Polo Invitational, the USC Women of Troy toppled the Rainbow Wahine, in the day's only MPSF match. The third ranked USC beat Hawaii 4-8.

The Wahine fell behind early in the first quarter, with USC scoring 3 goals in 1 minute and 23 seconds. In the second, battling back and forth, each team was able to score 2 goals a piece. Karin van Hoff finally put Hawaii on the board, scoring within the first 30 seconds.

The third quarter was dominated by the `Bows. UH put up a strong defense, not allowing USC to score a single goal. Goals by Shannon Carroll and Beth Novick put the Rainbows within one. With UH at their heals, USC retaliated in the fourth quarter. Stepping up their defense USC prevented the `Bows from scoring another goal. The Women of Troy added 3 more goals, sealing the 4-8 win.

USC's Katrin Dierolf, led all scorers with 5 goals, 2 in the first and fourth quarters. It was a team effort for the `Bows with van Hoff, Garner-Prohs, Carroll, and Novick each scoring a goal for the home team.

The Rainbow Wahine drop to 4-9 overall and 2-3 in the MPSF. Hawaii returns to the water tomorrow in non conference play, as they, along with Cal and USC, take on Canada, Australia, and New Zealand in Day 2 of the Aloha Classic Water Polo Invitational at Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
