KANEOHE, Oahu - The University of Hawai'i women's golf team finished the first day of the Dr. Donnis Thompson Rainbow Wahine Golf Invitational in 12th place with a 661 two-round total. The Rainbow Wahine found the windy conditions of the Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course a stern test, but managed to close the day on a positive, with a 325 second round score.
Freshman Tara Chappell led the Wahine with a 157 first day total that placed her in a tie for 24th. Junior Megan McGuinness was only a few strokes away, as she sat in a tie for 36th with her two-round total of 161. However, the best performance by a Hawai'i golfer came from junior Brooke Jackson, who led the UH-Silver squad with a 156 total, good enough to put her in a tie for 21st.
Southern California showed why they are one of the best teams in the country by taking the first day lead with a 595 total. The Trojans were the only team in the field to record two sub-300 rounds. However, it was Arizona's Cassandra Kirkland who claimed the individual lead with a two-under-par total of 142, one stroke better than USC's Mikaela Parmlid.
The tournament will close with tomorrow's final round, scheduled to begin with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. HST.
