UH Drops Pair in Chevron Paradise Classic

HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i dropped two games tonight in the Chevron Paradise Classic, losing to Santa Clara, 4-1, and No. 6 Washington, 3-2.

The loss puts the Rainbow Wahine (2-2) as the No. 2 seed in tomorrow's final day of the tournament squaring off against Oklahoma State.

Melissa Coogan suffered the loss in the Santa Clara game going five innings allowing five runs (two earned) while striking out five and walking three.

Redshirt freshman Paula Blanning went the final retiring the side in order.

The Rainbow Wahine offense was limited to just five hits as Justina Kahaku drove in UH's only run in the fifth inning.

In the late game, UH lost to No. 6 Washington, 3-2. The Huskies scored in the top of the seventh to eek out the victory.

UH's Shannon Tabion went the distance striking out two and walking one, while scattering six hits.

Hawai`i's defense was not sharp tonight as UH committed three errors in the Santa Clara loss and two more against Washington.

Against the Huskies, Stacey Porter delivered the big blow as she came up with a two-out, two-run single to left to tie the game at two in the fifth inning.

The final day of the tournament gets underway Sunday morning at 10 with Louisville taking on Santa Clara. Hawai`i battles the Oklahoma State at noon. Washington (4-0) is the No. 1 seed and plays the winner of Santa Clara-Louisville game at 2 p.m. The winners of the noon and 2 p.m games play for the title at 4 p.m.
