'Bows Fall to Tulsa, 76-51

TULSA, Okla. - Tulsa snapped a five-game losing streak to Hawai'i with an emphatic 76-51 victory, Thursday night, before a nationally televised game on ESPN2 at the Donald Reynolds Center. The Rainbow Warriors dropped to 15-9 overall and 7-8 in Western Athletic Conference play.The 'Bows suffered its worst loss since a 103-64 defeat to TCU, Jan. 4, 2001. UH also lost for the first time at the Reynolds Center since Jan. 28, 2001, ending a three-game win streak.

Junior forward Phil Martin led the 'Bows with 12 points and seven rebounds. Guard Michael Kuebler added 10 points and guard Mark Campbell dished out nine assists. All-American candidate Carl English was held to just seven points on 3-of-9 shooting. The junior was battling the flu, which affected numerous members of the team.

As a team, UH shot just 37.7 percent from the field, including 4-of-13 from 3-point range.

Forward Kevin Johnson led all Tulsa scorers with 19 points. Guards Dante Swanson and Jason Parker each chipped in with 15 points.

With the Golden Hurricane holding a 14-13 lead, UH center Haim Shimonovich grabbed a rebound but landed awkwardly on his right ankle. As he lay limp on the floor, Kuebler nailed his only trey to give the 'Bows its final lead at 16-14 with 9:35 to play in the first half.

Tulsa then used a 7-0 run over the next 4:00 to forge ahead 23-16. The Hurricane maintained that lead and after Parker's driving lay-up with :13 remaining, Tulsa entered the half with a 31-21 advantage.

The Hurricane iced the game by scoring the first eight points of the second half to take a 39-21 lead. Hawai'i would get no closer than 15 the rest of the way.

The 'Bows conclude its three-game, 12-day road trip at Rice, Saturday, Mar. 1. The game will be televised regionally on Fox Sports Net (Oceanic Ch. 42). Tip-off is set for 4:00 p.m. CST. The game can also be heard on KKEA (1420A AM) Radio throughout the islands.
