HONOLULU--In a day of competitive play, the University of Hawai`i women's tennis team (3-6) fell to the Santa Clara Bronco's (4-5) 4-3, Sunday morning at Central Oahu Regional Park. Coming off a loss Friday to San Diego State, the Rainbow Wahine did not let up on the competition.
Hawai`i won a single doubles match, giving the Bronco's a 1-0 lead at the start of the day. Lauren Fitzgerald and Paige Mainor posted their third win this season as partners at the No. 3 doubles spot. Fitzgerald and Mainor beat the Santa Clara team of Mariko Kawakami and Pati Ruiz, 8-3.
On the singles side, the Rainbow Wahine scored points on the first, second and fifth courts. In a heartbreaker match, Mio Fukushima dropped in two sets to Janalle Kaloi. Fukushima had a chance to split sets, but despite her valiant effort Kaloi pulled ahead and captured the match, 6-2, 7-5.
In the No. 5 position, Renata Camargo extended her season win streak to four, the longest of any Rainbow Wahine this season. Camargo defeated Santa Clara's Mariko Kawakami, 6-2, 6-1.
Up next for the Rainbow Wahine is a dual meet at Cal State Riverside, March 7. After that they will travel to Cal State Northridge and UC Irvine to round out their three meet road trip.
