HONOLULU - The Hawai'i men's basketball team held on to a 69-67 exhibition victory over the EA Sports All-Stars, Sunday, at the Stan Sheriff Center. The Rainbow Warriors (2-2), who were playing in its first game in 10 days, next host Oregon State, Dec. 10.
UH head coach Riley Wallace emptied his bench and used a variety of lineups throughout the game. Ten of the team's 12 players scored in the game including Michael Kuebler's game-high 15 points. Senior Haim Shimonovich recorded 10 points and 10 rebounds while junior Jake Sottos added 10 points and was a perfect from the field (4-for-4).
In the starting lineup for the EA Sports All-Stars was former UH guards Mike McIntyre and Mark Campbell. McIntyre scored eight of his 11 points in the first half, including two of his patented "Rainbow" 3-pointers and Campbell added 10 points including a lay-up at the first half buzzer, which tied the game at 37.
The 'Bows came out firing in the second half, scoring the first seven points to take a 44-37 lead. UH led by as many as 14 points in the period until EA Sports used a 12-0 run, capped by McIntyre's third trey, to close to within 55-52 with 7:55 remaining. Leon Ballard's layup with 4:51 tied the game at 59 but Sottos responded with a trey in the corner to put UH back ahead.
With under a minute to play and UH holding a 69-67 lead, Jason Carter missed a reverse layup giving EA Sports the ball back. But the Hawai'i defense held and didn't allow EA Sports an attempt at the basket.
UH's game against Oregon State is the first of six games during a 16-day stretch. Tip-off is set for 7:05 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.
